Major order for Innofreight from VW subsidiary ŠKO-Energo

At the end of the first quarter, Innofreight is making another significant stride in the field of decarbonization: the Europe-wide rail logistics provider is taking over the supply of more than 400,000 tons of biomass per year to the Czech energy company ŠKO-Energo in Mladá Boleslav.

Working side by side with high-profile clients, Innofreight has been working on the decarbonization of European industry for nearly 25 years. Biomass is considered the raw material of the future: derived from logs and wood residues, it will increasingly replace coal—and requires an efficient and reliable transport solution from a single source. Innofreight is taking a significant step closer to its goal of shifting this valuable energy source to rail and supporting European industry in its efforts. Building on successful biomass projects in Warsaw, Poland and Brno, Czech Republic, Innofreight is now setting another milestone in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic.

There, the energy company ŠKO-Energo not only supplies the Volkswagen Group-owned automaker Škoda with energy but also provides heat to the city itself – and has been undergoing a comprehensive transformation process since 2024. Within three years, ŠKO-Energo will convert its entire energy production to biomass, investing approximately 170 million euros in the process. Innofreight, which already has extensive experience in the Eastern European wood and biomass sector thanks to its companies inno4wood and InnoSped, aims to handle the unloading of more than 400,000 tons of biomass annually in the future. “This is the largest biomass project in the Czech Republic. Winning the contract for this project was a major priority for us and our employees, as we see ourselves as partners in industrial transformation,” says Innofreight owner Peter Wanek-Pusset.

For one thing, Innofreight relies on high-performance equipment: The WoodTainer system will ensure the power plant’s supply. The stationary unloading machine, also developed by Innofreight, ensures efficient and safe unloading. Established in the timber industry since 2007, it can unload and transport up to 1,200 m³ of biomass per hour—equivalent to up to 30 containers per hour. In the future, Innofreight, which is increasingly positioning itself as a full-service provider, will also take over traction services. This is made possible by the stake in the Czech rail operator CityRail, which has been working closely with Innofreight since 2021 and has been part of the group since mid-2025.
