Just in time for the start of the new year, Schwaiger Holzindustrie has put two sets of new Smart GigaWoods 5×5 into operation. The long-established German company has been producing sawn timber since 1911, and since 1984 at its current location in Hengersberg, in Lower Bavaria.
With an annual cut of more than 1 million solid cubic meters, the Hengersberg plant is one of the largest in its sector in Germany, and Schwaiger sells the sawn timber worldwide. Sustainability is a top priority for the company. For this reason, a considerable proportion of the incoming timber and the exported sawn timber is handled by rail.
New wagons, more payload
For this purpose, Schwaiger Holzindustrie not only acquired an eight-kilometer rail track and greatly expanded the siding, but also purchased a fleet of wagons for transporting wood and containers. This is where Innofreight comes in for further transport optimization. In order to take even better advantage of the track and train capacities, Schwaiger Holzindustrie replaced older wagons with our modern Smart GigaWoods 5×5 at the turn of the year. One wagon of our 5×5 variant allows payloads of up to 125 solid cubic meters.
22 InnoWagons, with Smart GigaWood stanchion system and in combination with EuroDual locomotives, offer the optimum in train length, loading volume, and train weight. “We can achieve at least a 15% increase in payload compared to the wagons used previously,” reports Holger Wittmer, Timber Purchasing, on his initial experience with the Innofreight Smart GigaWood. He further adds, “The optimized load securing significantly reduces loading and unloading times.”
