The GigaWood system plays a key role in shaping timber transport in Germany, Czechia and Sweden. Building on this success, Innofreight is setting another milestone by supporting ProTrain in handling all rail transports for Holmen. With the deployment of the Smart GigaWood, up to 750,000 m3 of roundwood will be efficiently transported by rail each year.
The roots of Innofreight lie in the timber industry. Since its foundation in 2002, numerous innovations have been developed here – one of which is the Smart GigaWood. This system impressively demonstrates the precision with which Innofreight constructs its superstructures. “Smart” stands both for technological advances in the field of digitalization and for further development in design. Every centimeter is used to maximize transport capacity and efficiently move round timber with lengths of 2 to 12 meters by rail.
The result is a true giant on the rails: developed in close cooperation with customers, the Smart GigaWood impresses with its high loading volume and impressive payload. Thanks to optimal utilization of the clearance profile and low dead weight, the payload increases by around 30 percent compared to conventional timber wagons. These advantages have contributed to Smart GigaWood becoming a major player in roundwood transport in Germany, Czechia, and Sweden. Thanks to the bigger Swedish loading profile of 10.5 m2 the pile sizes for timber can reach up to 35 m3sub (solid under bark) and the pulpwood up to 30 m3sub, where older wagons were overloaded at 22 m3sub.
The Smart GigaWood connects Sweden
Innofreight is now making another mark there: All of Holmen‘s rail transport will be carried out by ProTrain in the future. This is based on a new concept with InnoWaggons, which will connect all Holmen locations from Småland in the south to Norrbotten in the north, covering distances of 300 kilometers and more. Two trains with a length of 300 meters will transport 750,000 m3 of round timber every year, with the Swedish version of the 2×40 ft Smart GigaWood achieving an impressive loading volume of 140 m3sub.
Innofreight Sweden is drawing on the experience gained over the past eight years in its collaboration with SCA, Europe’s largest private forest owner. Every year, around three million m3 of round timber are transported energy-efficiently by rail using the Smart GigaWood. Thanks to the system, a single train can transport around 2,600 m3 – replacing 65 timber trucks. Especially in the climatically challenging north, the Smart GigaWood system proves to be a reliable solution that can withstand even the harshest conditions.
