Innofreight Transportlogistik operated the first train carrying beech wood for UPM Biochemicals at the beginning of August. The high utilization rate and the ease of loading and unloading the SmartGigaWood system impressed the customer just as much as the punctual handling of the transport.
UPM is currently commissioning the world’s first biorefinery in Leuna (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany). There, the company extracts biochemicals from sustainably sourced hardwood for the production of recyclable everyday items and materials. These enable a wide range of applications, including textiles, plastics, rubber, cosmetics, and medicines, and significantly reduce both the consumption of fossil raw materials and CO2 emissions.
With over 100 companies and around 15,000 jobs, the Leuna chemical site is an industrial cornerstone in eastern Germany. The biorefinery in Leuna is the world’s first plant of its kind on an industrial scale and one of the largest ongoing investments by a chemical company in Germany.
