Since October 2008 SCA Norrbränsle transports biomass with a block train with Innofreight WoodTainers to two heating power plants in Sweden. There are two different biomass fractions delivered, peat, bark, and wood chips from forest residue. The transport distances from loading terminals in Middle Sweden (Sundsvall area) to the heating plants are around 400–500km, due to the fast rotary unloading with the Kalmar large forklift trucks (unloading time per block train is around 4h) it is possible to carry out 5 transports per week. Thanks to Innofreight WoodTainer System it is possible to transport in this way around 300,000t of biomass in one year. From January 2009 2 further unloading locations at large heating plants in North Sweden will start operating. In Europe there is no comparable project where a similar amount of biomass would be transported on rail. These transports attract international attention. For Innofreight this is an important project in the fast growing Scandinavian biomass business. Thereby, SCA Norrbränsle trusts the proven WoodTainer technology.
